PROF JOHN BARTON

We are thrilled this year to welcome,  Prof John Barton to give our Annual Bedell Boyle Lecture.  John was born in London but has had his entire academic career in Oxford, where he also studied Theology.  He was University Lecturer in Theology (Old Testament) 1974-1989, Reader in Biblical Studies 1989-1991, and Oriel & Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture 1991-2014.

Since retiring he has been a Senior Research Fellow at Campion Hall, Oxford, a small Jesuit college for postgraduate students.  He is an Anglican priest, assisting in the parish of Abingdon-on-Thames near Oxford, where he lives with his wife, Mary.  They have a daughter and two granddaughters.

His most recent book is A History of the Bible: The Book and Its Faiths, Allen Lane/Penguin 2019. He has also written about the prophets, the biblical canon, and ethics in the Bible, and is the author of two popular books on the Bible, What is the Bible? and The Bible: The Basics.’
